AAA/AAT

Therapy animals have proven to have overwhelmingly positive benefits on humans through animal-assisted activities (AAA) and animal-assisted therapy (AAT) . Animal-assisted activities are simply any form of casual human-animal interaction, such as dogs visiting the elderly at a nursing home. Similarly, animal-assisted therapy (AAT) also involves interaction between humans and other animals but is practiced with trained professionals for specific individualized therapy goals in mind for a specific human.

AACR

Animal-Assisted Crisis Response K-9

Certification training consists of comprehensive training for essential skills needed for animal-assisted crisis response. Agencies use certified AACR teams to provide comfort and support to people affected by disasters. Oliver has received additional training beyond the normal therapy dog training and is certified with HOPEaacr as an animal assisted crisis response K-9.

Courtroom

Juvenile Court

As a courthouse dog, Oliver is a professionally trained assistance dog, suitable for providing quiet companionship to children and individuals in legal settings without causing any disruption of the proceedings. These dogs are working dogs that are specially chosen because of their calm demeanor and ability to work in a high-stress environment thereby decreasing the risk of creating legal issues. When their workday is over they go home with their primary handler and are “off duty.”

1st Responders

First Responder Therapy Dogs are certified teams (handler and dog) that go into the field to bring calm and smiles to the faces of on-duty first responders. This can include: making scheduled visits to fire stations, police departments, 911 call centers; attending debriefing/defusing sessions following difficult service calls, and visiting basecamps at wildland fires.

In addition to their normal therapy dog training, first responder therapy dogs and their handlers are required to go through training including Psychological First Aid, Psychological recovery, Behavioral Health for Fire and EMS Personnel and Incident Command System.

Therapy dogs visit settings such as nursing homes, daycares, schools, and hospitals alongside their owners. A therapy dog’s visitation goal is to help brighten someone’s day, and they are trained to provide psychological and physiological support.

Therapy dogs are being increasingly used as a fairly new form of treatment that is gaining traction in the healthcare field. Once known mainly as a holistic approach to health and wellness, dog therapy has become recognized more as a popular and conventional approach to care. Components of dog therapy can be seen on college campuses, hospitals, and even airports around the world.
